Stephen Ministry Training Application

Purpose
The Stephen Minister is committed to providing a one-to-one caring ministry to persons in need (e.g. in times of loneliness, of becoming a new parent, of illness or hospitalization, of grief or other crisis situations).

Accountability
Stephen Ministers are directly accountable to the Stephen Leaders. They, in turn, are accountable to the Ministers.

Responsibilities
  • Give priority to the 50 hours of training to be scheduled shortly.
  • Study all the materials used in the course, including books and articles.
  • Participate in ongoing supervision and continuing education on a bi-monthly basis for the balance of the 24 month commitment.
  • Be available for service as a Stephen Minister (averaging 10-12 hours per month) for 18 months following the completion of training.
  • Respond promptly to referrals made by Stephen Leaders.
  • Seek to establish a one-to-one caring relationship following such a referral. Visitation will normally be on a weekly basis. The goal is for each Stephen Minister to have at least one, but not more than two caring relationships at any given time.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times by not discussing care receivers by name or implication.
  • Set aside time on a regular basis for Bible reading and prayer. Pray especially for care receivers, other Stephen Ministers, and Stephen Leaders.

Materials and training will cost the ministry approximately $60. If you are able to help defray your cost, it would be greatly appreciated.

Base this on your current level of understanding of the role of Stephen Minister.

This includes faithful participation in the initial 50-hours of training, weekly visits to your care receiver, and twice-monthly participation in small group supervision.

All Christians are called to be in ministry. As Paul says in Ephesians 4, we are given different gifts so we can be used to complement each other in the work of the church. It is with this in mind that the Stephen Ministry Leadership Team will look at each application to pick those who we prayerfully believe God is calling to this particular ministry at this time. This is not a process of judging, but rather of discerning which gifts are needed and matching up those that God seems to be calling. If for some reason you are not picked, please do not see this as rejection, but rather as redirection. The church has many needs and it is important that you find the place that God is calling you, so that the work of the Spirit might be done in and through each of us.
